Calling All Studio Knitters

Do you have a Studio machine that makes lace?  Would you mind letting me know what model number you use?

By Studio, I mean any of the following brands:  Silver, Studio, Singer, Empisal, Knitmaster, Lanofix.  Hmm, are there any others, or did I get them all?

I've been shopping for a good, middle-of-the-field Studio that I would use for adapting my Enchanted Edgings to Studio techniques.  I'm trying to figure out what my readers are using to knit.

  2. I have a Silver Reed SK280 with a LC2 lace carriage that knits lace. It hasn't been in use, though, as I haven't had time to get around to figure out how to use it.

  3. I've got an SK840 electronic machine with a Mod 560l lace carriage. It didn't work correctly to start with, but I got someone to adjust it to suit the machine, and now it's fine. I have plans for it, just as soon as I finish my Christmas knitting! :)

    1. Since I am working on the Knitmaster SK580, which is very similar to the SK840, I wonder what didn't work with the 560L carriage? They are so much cheaper than the 580LC and seem to be identical. And there are different opinions on all the parts' lists, some say it works, other say the 560LC only works with the SK560. Would you please be so kind and tell me what's the difference?
I don't need the knit radar, as I'm working with Designaknit.

      Kind regards

  4. Hi Diana
    I am using a Empisal KH260 with a LC2 Lace carriage. It's similar to the KH360 but without the build-in knit radar/leader.
    Kind regards

  5. I use a studio 700 and LOVE the lace capabilities on it.

  6. Hi Diana, are all the lace techniques necessarily with electronic machines?

  7. Charlene, it wouldn't have to be an electronic machine, but it would need to do transfer lace. Usually that means there's a lace carriage.

I really don't know all the Studio models and what they had. For a while, it seems they only had punch lace, which Brother knitters call thread lace. Then they had single-direction, single-transfer lace done with the same carriage. Then, I think they had an optional lace carriage that would do multiple transfer lace.

  8. SK360, punchcard, lace carriage, "multiple transfer lace" is done with the yarn out of the carriage for the transfer rows. A really lovely workhorse of a machine. Would love to see the enchanted edgings done - I just can't work out how to do them on my own!

  9. I have an SK360 too, with the lace carriage. This is super for a beginner (as I am) as these models are CHEAP! And super sturdy so it's harder to break them in ignorance.

  10. Thank you Diana. I'm currently learning to figure out how to use lace charts so that will have to do for now.

  11. Knitmaster 360 standard gauge with lace carriage
and 370 fine gauge with lace carriage

These Knitmaster machines come with special needles (less stiff than the others) they can transfer stitches.
I have been told that changing the needles lace can be knitted with the others machine

  12. I looked at one in Frisco, Texas that was a 700 in very nice shape, but the lady either didn't have or couldn't find the lace carriage. I really don't know if it's complete, which almost rules it out. I know I can find a lace carriage, but that adds to the cost, and I'd hate to have to scrounge a lot of other parts.

There's a friend in the DFW club who has a newer one with the electronic lace carriage. I don't know much about that model, but she did say I would need the Silver Link cable so I could use it with DAK. A bigger investment, but wouldn't it be nice for me, with all my designing and my trial-and-error process of getting lace just perfect, if I didn't have to punch cards? But ladies, would that be too different from what my typical reader/customer/student is knitting on?

I am asking the Lord to help me decide and maybe send the right one my way, preferably a purchase that doesn't involve shipping.

  13. I have a sk280 (punchcard)and a Singer 560 (electronic. I think you would be fine purchasing an electronic model so you could use DAK, but for teaching only use patterns that are 24 sts wide.

Hrmph! I think I have a valid opinion here. Being a gentleman, I shall hold my tongue.

  15. My sincere apologies to Oslo! I love gentlemen knitters, and whip me with a wet noodle for sexism.

  16. Silver Reed SK280 with the LC2. The machine I would recommend if you are looking for a used one, is the 560, but the lace carriages for those are hard to find. When they do come up, they are very inexpensive.

  17. I have a 360 which was the first one to come with the flexible needles it has a separate lace carriage, the 700 is basically the same machine with a few extras. I too would love to do your lace edgings but doubt if I can work it out on my own, if you bring out a disk & booklet for the 360 I will definately buy it. I would also love to make your enchanted forest scarf as I am trying to work out how to do it with a punchcard on the 360 & not getting on too well. Please do consider the 360 or 700 punchcard machines. Love your videos.

  18. Diana,
Check out craigslist. Most of the time people that list itms there are looking to get rid of somethung they don't need anymore so the prices are VERY reasonable. I recently found a sk 560 electronic with a ribber and a lace carriage and a sk151 bulky machine for $500.

  19. Hi, I have the Studio 360 with lace carriage. In the 28 years I have had the machine I have only used the lace carriage once! I think I will dig it out again and have another go.

  20. I have a Singer 700 and lace carriage. The 700 is a punch card machine, no electronics to learn or depend on. The 700 has ball bearing runners so pushing the carriage is a breeze, lots easier than even the SK360. I'd advise that you can't go wrong with a 700. The lace carriages didn't come as standard equipment as with the Brother so will have to purchase separately.

  22. Hi I have a Silvereed SK-840 and have just bought a lace carriage LC-580. I'm trying to use it with designaknit 8 lace patterns. But something goes wrong the needles gets stuck. I had one day where it worked like a dream. Then I took it of the machine, and it wont knit lace when I put it back on. Another thing is when the lace carriage gets stuck something happens to the lace pattern in DK8. The program tells me there is a error at row 1 and I cannot use the pattern. Please can anyone tell me what is going on

    1. Sorry, I am not a repair person. I really have no idea what is wrong. I would strongly suggest that you take the machine to a Studio/Silver Reed dealer.

  23. I don't know if you work on this type of machine put I need help. This is a second hand machine, I just got and I'm trying to learn how to us it. It seems that one of the parts is locked in place, I have looked in the book and this part doesn't have a name , so here goes. The machine is a studio 700 knitting machine the carriage is the unit I need help with it needs to slide back and forth to knit with this machine. The part that is locked is at the back top right side of the carriage there is one just like it on the left side(it can move). I dont know if there is a switch I can turn or if I need to just oil it and see if it will lossen up can you help me.

  24. I really do not know a lot about mechanical things. We have successfully freed stuck mechanical parts on older machines using a product called Kroil, a penetrating oil. You put it on and then you wait, trying to loosen the thing occasionally over the next day or two.

There are very good repair people in various locations around the country. You may need to mail your carriage to one of those guys. - Diana

  27. I have a 30 year old singer 560, I am trying to start using it again.
When I cast on, I get long loops of yarn that doesn't knit.
If I place weights on the loops it will start to knit well.
Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

    1. Probably tension is the issue. And you need weights as soon as you start.

      Delete
  28. It probably needs a sponge bar, for starters.

You need another way to cast-on that will hold weights. Try a cast-on rag or a cast-on comb. Or try the string method. These should be in your manual, but I also cover them in my different tutorial videos.

  29. Would anyone with the SK280 be willing to share a copy of the Pattern Book? I have an SK360 without the punchcards. Thinking they would be the same, I bought the SK280 punchcards. They aren't the same at all. I don't know what the patterns are supposed to look like or what settings to use without the pattern book. Or, I would be willing to trade the SK280 cards for a set of the SK360 cards. Thanks!

  30. Dear Diana I have a Knitmaster SK560 and Ribber Knitmaster SR160, and both have worked well for years. However, I am having a problem with the Ribber attached to the Knitter and to cast on, I put 65 needles forward on knitter, 65 needles forward intermittently on the ribber.
The knitter plus ribber have started putting the first eleven stitches forward on the knitter and this jams the two carriages and they will not proceed further. Without having any need in knitting position both he knitter and ribber move back and forth with no problem. They have always knitted perfectly together before, why are they suddenly jaming?
It has never happened before, all neddles look fine and not broken, yet put the needles back without any engaged and the knitter and ribber sail up and down with no problems at all. I have tried putting new needles in, everything, but jamb it still does.

I do not know what to try next, it worked perfectly the previous garment before, including lace pattens etc., Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
