Garter Carriage Repairs

Does anyone out there have a dead garter carriage motor that they'd be willing to send us for John to play with?

John is researching the motors and gears needed for our garter carriages and would like to have one to study.  We know that these motors are increasingly rare, that they need replaced eventually on every garter carriage (we've had to replace a couple ourselves, but didn't keep the dead ones).

All my GC knitter friends and I are very fond of our garter carriages and want to keep them going!  Isn't it horrific that this little motor wearing out could be THE END?  John and I hope to find a source for the motors and necessary gears and stock them.

Pictured:  a good one, our only spare, and we don't want to put it "under the knife."

  2. I would really appreciate this. Could you email me at diana_knits "at" sbcglobal "dot" net? I almost never go on Ravelry, and my password and login is somewhere at home (where I am usually not).

  3. Did you ever find the specifics of the gc motor or where we could purchase a replacement motor? Thanks, Rita

  6. Hi, like you I'm looking for a solution too. My wife has the KG88, and belongs to a machine knitting club. I've now found myself, along with another husband as unofficial repair "specialists". I now have two KG88's and two KG93's in for repair!! Withe the kluxury of teh repair manual, available free on various sites, I've done the basic DC checks and eventually arrived at the motor. With the luxury of one "good" motor I've now found three of the four machines have motor issues, I've also had one power supply problem which looked like a cracked cct board after a drop, I've strapped out the crack with wire and this is now funtioning again. I too have searched, there are various sites in HK and China at £50 ish for a motor as well as the Autralian one in an ear;ier thread off ebay. If you follow this link on ebay, it allows you to make an offer. I've done that and gained a reduction both in shipping and unit price, so I've ordered two, wish me luck!! I've alos gound a very nice gentleman here in the UK at www.knittingmachinerepairs.co.uk, called Neil Collinson mailto:info@knittingmachinerepairs.co.uk who adverises a KG 88 service for £60, I've emailed him as his reply to my motor replacement mail suggested a £60 cost, which looks exceptional value, will update on his response. I've alos used a chinese company Donald Cao www.creativecounter.com who have a whole wealth of all makes of knitting machine parts, new. They are prompt, exceptional service and have all those "little" bits that break or get lost, from carriages to complete machine. i've mailed him to see if he has motors, will again update if I get more info. The motor is easy to replace, eight screws and a circlip and its free. If you need the service manual google or http://www.ebruegger.dyndns.org/Manual/KG88-89-Garter%20C-SM.pdf If you want to share info and other sources p.i.b@btinternet.com is my email. I'll let you know if I get more info. Please share any you have.

  7. Finally, you mention the gear on the shaft. Unless its damaged, its easily removable, i just used a knife blade in the gap between motor and gear, and eased off, simply slide on spline of new motor and all is well.
